Headquarters of Gustavo Gili

The former headquarters of the Gustavo Gili publishing house, designed by Joaquim Gili + Francesc Bassó (members of Grup R, 1952-1961), was built between 1954 and 1960 and is located in a courtyard of a block of houses in the Eixample district of Barcelona. The publishing house, with rectilinear volumes on the outside with the curved forms on the inside, is one of the best example of rationalist architecture from the late 1950s. In 1961 it was awarded with the FAD Architecture Prize and is today protected as a cultural asset of local interest. Last year it has been acquired by the Barcelona City Council to build the new Barcelona Culture and Education Centre.

The editorial complex consists of three low buildings with a ground floor and a first floor. Each complex is dedicated to a specific part of the publishing house: administration, offices and storage.

The headquarters of the Gustavo Gili publishing house is actually venue for the exhibition "Hard Lines: buildings, design and urban planning in Barcelona (1949-1974)”, from 3 February to 2 July 2023, with 29 architectural, urban planning and design proposals reconstructed through documents, texts and images.
